US and China Extend Tariff Truce for 90 Days to Protect Holiday Trade

The United States and China have agreed to extend their tariff truce for another 90 days. This decision prevents the immediate imposition of triple-digit tariffs on each other’s goods. The move comes as US retailers prepare for the crucial year-end holiday season. It aims to keep import costs lower during the seasonal shopping surge.
US President Donald Trump announced the extension on his Truth Social platform. He said he had signed an executive order delaying higher tariffs until November 10 at 12:01 a.m. EST. All other terms of the truce will remain unchanged. The action ensures stability for businesses in the coming months.
China’s Commerce Ministry also confirmed the delay. It suspended additional tariffs and postponed for 90 days the inclusion of US firms on its trade restriction lists. These measures mirror the US actions and signal ongoing cooperation. Officials hope this pause will support trade flows between the two nations.
Trump’s executive order stated that talks with China aim to address a lack of trade reciprocity. The statement emphasised concerns over both economic and national security issues. It also noted that China is taking steps to improve trade arrangements. The US views these actions as progress toward a fairer relationship.
The truce had been set to expire at 12:01 a.m. EDT on Tuesday. The extension gives importers more time to stock goods for the autumn and Christmas seasons. Lower tariffs will help reduce costs for electronics, apparel, and toys. Businesses see this as a critical relief ahead of peak demand.
